Brookline dentist discusses how lasers are used in dentistry

Laser technology is a foundation of the Alpha Plus Dental Center. There are many good reasons Dr. Kovtun and his team place such a high priority on this approach to dental procedures.

Lasers have been used in dentistry since the 1990s and are generally associated with:

  • Better patient experience
  • Less discomfort
  • Decreased need for anesthesia
  • Precise treatment
  • Reduced healing times
  • Minimal bleeding, swelling
  • Preservation of healthy tooth structure

How lasers work

The laser instrument directs an intense, narrow beam of light to the treatment area. When energy in the form of light is applied to the area, tissues can be removed, shaped, or manipulated in other ways depending on the patient’s needs.

Lasers in dentistry are considered a minimally invasive alternative to conventional techniques and instruments. Many conventional options are sources of dental fear, such as the drill and shots. Generally, the less invasive the procedure, the less bleeding, pain, and other unwanted side effects occur during and after treatment.

How lasers are used in the dentist’s office

There are many applications for lasers in dentistry. Generally, these applications are divided into 2 categories:

  • Diagnostics
  • Treatment

Lasers can be used for biopsies. A small sample of tissue is removed gently and safely to check for the presence of cancer cells. Lasers can also aid in the identification of hardened plaque or tartar on tooth surfaces above and below the gums.

Lasers are used to treat a number of conditions or cosmetic concerns. Bleaching solutions may be activated by laser energy to speed up teeth whitening. The pain of cankers and cold sores can be relieved via laser instruments. The gums may be gently reshaped and bacteria removed in the treatment of periodontitis.

Hard tissues can also be treated with modern laser technologies. A tooth damaged by the combination of acid-producing bacteria and sugary drinks and foods can be repaired with lasers that remove decay. Lasers may be used to prepare the tooth for either a filling or root canal therapy.

The way lasers are used in dentistry today differs from the past. There are more dental applications than ever before for the comfortable and precise treatment of conditions in both the hard and soft tissues.

I drive over an hour from Cape Cod for all my dental work because Dr. Kovtun is one of the few Biological dentists around. Not only is he a master at dentistry but he offers a healthier holistic approach to oral health that is so important to me. Often times, conventional dentists overlook at the importance or how oral health effects the entire body. He and his staff are super nice and I'm glad I found them!! Read More

Have been a patient here for quite a while now. It was hard to find a dentist that I trusted in the area, but I've really enjoyed this practice. They tend to be conservative with their assessment, which I really value - no unnecessary treatments, and my teeth feel and look great. Read More

Dr. Kovtun is great. I chipped my 7-year molar, and he was able to fit me in the very next morning! He safely, quickly, and painlessly removed my old amalgam filling and prepped my tooth with a temporary fix while I wait for a beautiful new permanent one. He is knowledgeable, informative, and accomodating. The staff is super-competent and friendly. I will definitely be scheduling other dental procedures here. Excellent, excellent, excellent!!
